How much power a home consumes should be a factor when calculating the cost of a home. The more efficient a home is, the more you can pad your wallet. Once no more power is needed, it may go back to the power company and you could be compensated. With an Off-The Grid setup, all power stays with that home and stored. You are not connected to the power company.
Tankless water heaters are a great option if you are starting from scratch or have access to run the necessary gas lines. Tankless water heaters will typically save you money as there is no water to have to keep heating up. Tankless water heaters are available in gas and electric options. Also there are multiple sizes needed based on your needs. If not careful, long showers can equal a more expensive bill.
Other areas to consider in home building is the type of windows you are installing, the heating an cooling system, energy consumption of appliances, materials available.
