Real estate is generally a wise investment, the risks are minimal and the potential earnings are great. Perhaps one of the most common methods to be able to use your 401k savings to invest in property is to borrow money against your 401k plan.
Any property investment should offer a minimal risk. As long as the market conditions are positive you should have returns greater than that which you borrowed, this would then entail you to be able to pay back the amount borrowed and leave you with a healthy amount of cash as extra. It is like loaning yourself money over a short term.
Of course there are always considerations to be made if thinking of undertaking such a process; the main being the amount of money that you are able to borrow. Most 401k schemes will have a limit of around $50, 000 depending upon the amount that you have already paid in. Also it is worth bearing in mind that there is likely to be no tax benefits involved in the real estate mortgage when using this method.
Depending upon the exact 401k plan that you hold, you may be able to move funds into an individual retirement account. It is possible that a penalty may be occurred by doing this. But the penalty amount can be worth absorbing if the potential profits are great. You would then have access to funds that you could use for real estate investing.
Perhaps a safer route would be to consider a plan that gives you the option to place money in a real estate investment trust. This offers less risk as the money is given to specific companies that are solely concerned with buying and selling property.
All the above options offer large potential profits and are preferential to just letting your savings stay in the 401k plan. The choice depends upon the amount of risk you are willing to be open to.
