Be sure that the home kit you purchase is not just a pile of lumber. You want one of the kits that have a pre-engineered floor system, walls and trusses. Once you install the flooring, you stand up the outside walls (this is one of the places you will need help) and nail them into place. Next the interior walls are stood and fastened into place. Finally the trusses for the roof are installed. Once the decking and shingles of the roof are applied, your home will be dried in and you can work at your own pace. Rain, snow or other foul weather will not stop you from completing your work at this time.
Home kits let you do your own finish work. That means you can incorporate your own sense of style into the home. You are your own interior decorator. You are the one to decide if carpet, cabinets or fixtures need to be upgraded. The call is up to you and what fits into your budget. Since it will be your home, you can choose the lower grade choices now and upgrade later when money is not as tight.
If there are parts of the construction of your home that are beyond you skill levels, then you are able to serve as your own contractor and hire skilled construction workers to complete the task. Even though this may cost you a bit more, you will still have saved thousands of dollars by doing so much of the work yourself.
In fact, you can expect to pay half the cost of the home that was built by conventional construction next door. Yet your home will have the same completed value as that home has. When completed you will have built sweat equity into your dream home.
Home ownership is not an impossible dream. With the help of a few friends and family, you can have a very nice home that is yours. It will take a few of your weekends and the help of friends, but for half the expected cost, you can have your home.
