Cholesterol testing is a simple and safe method of finding out about the blood - cholesterol levels
in the body. The procedure is safe and the pain scale is nearly zero. It is the best way of keeping your levels where they need to be.

It is no secret that high amounts of cholesterol or LDL, and lipids in the bloodstream can cause a series of health problems. It will increase risk for such things as heart attack and stroke along with eventually causing coronary heart disease. Keeping these levels lower will reduce the risk of developing one of these deadly disorders.

There are good levels of cholesterol or HDL, which actually help our bodies in many ways. It enables us to produce vitamin D, which is normally impossible for our body to make. Another benefit is the fact that it enables our body to digest fat by producing the bile acids that we need to break lipids down.

Cholesterol testing

One of the easiest and most effective ways of controlling cholesterol levels in the blood stream is to get tested on a regular basis. By having a few simple tests you can greatly reduce the probability of having a chronic condition that is associated with high cholesterol.

As a general rule you should have your blood levels tested at least by the age of twenty, and then again once every five years. This should continue until you are forty and then every other year until then.

This test will keep track of such things as triglycerides, HDL, and LDL levels in your blood stream and eliminate your risk of having clogged arteries.

The night before your test you should not eat or drink anything, and refrain from having any alcoholic beverages at least two days prior to testing. Alcohol has a thinning effect on the blood that can interfere with testing.

The test itself is a simple process that will take a very minimal amount of time and effort on your part. It involves only the drawing of a small amount of blood and very limited pain.

After the test you can proceed with your daily life until you hear from your doctor. The results will likely be sent on to the physician's office in about two weeks. As long as the test results are below 200 nothing will probably be done, but for results over that special instructions will be given. Depending how high it is you will either have to go on a restricted diet or even begin a daily regime of cholesterol lowering medications.

Having regular cholesterol testing done will ensure that you don't suffer through prolonged health problems, and it will be a major step in taking control of your health.
